Using our proprietary Thermex-FR fire retardant and treatment process, we turn normal wood into SaferWood—wood that resists ignition, is allowed for use in the highest-risk wildfire environments, and preserves the natural beauty of wood. **Ignition-resistant** SaferWood meets the International Building Code (IBC) definition for fire-retardant-treated wood (FRTW) meaning it is significantly less combustible than regular, untreated wood. SaferWood limits flame spread, ember formation, and smoke development, making it suitable for exterior use in Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) areas. **Permanent protection** SaferWood is made through a one-time pressure-impregnation process using our proprietary Thermex-FR fire retardant. This protection is permanent: Thermex-FR is bound to the cellular structure of the wood through the pressure-treatment process, meaning that it’ll never leach or weather away, no matter the application or climate. **Appearance-grade** Our treatment process does not affect the final appearance, grain, or texture of the wood, except for Thermex-FR giving SaferWood a slightly golden, honeyed hue. We guarantee a mar-free finish on the good face of the wood, so that its natural beauty may be showcased in any application. ## Wood, wherever you want it SaferWood may be used anywhere fire-retardant-treated wood (FRTW) or ignition-resistant material is allowed or required. This includes the highest-risk Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) areas, like California and Colorado. SaferWood is compliant with the strictest codes in the U.S. and abroad. **The standard** SaferWood has been tested according to ASTM E2768 surface-burning following ASTM D2898 accelerated weathering. This testing sequence is designed to evaluate the combustibility of a material after years of climate exposure, and is used by national and state codes to determine whether a material can be considered FRTW and ignition-resistant. **The test** To earn the definition of ignition-resistant, a material must pass ASTM E2768 with a flame spread index (FSI) of 25 or less, a smoke development index (SDI) of 450 or less, and no evidence of progressive combustion. To qualify as FRTW, a material must meet the same standard, but have undergone ASTM D2898 accelerated weathering prior to ASTM E2768. **The result** SaferWood passes ASTM E2768 surface-burning following ASTM D2898 accelerated weathering with an FSI of ≤25, an SDI of ≤100, and no evidence of progressive combustion, making it compliant as FRTW and an ignition-resistant material ready for exterior use in WUI and high wildfire risk environments. ## United States SaferWood is compliant with the 2024 International Building Code (IBC) and 2024 International Wildland-Urban Interface Code (IWUIC) as FRTW and ignition resistant material. SaferWood may be used anywhere FRTW or ignition-resistant construction is demanded. ## California SaferWood is compliant with the 2025 California Building Code (CBC) and 2025 California Wildland-Urban Interface Code (CWUIC) as FRTW and ignition-resistant material. SaferWood may be used in any Fire Hazard Severity Zone including Very High. ## Colorado SaferWood is compliant with the Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code as FRTW and ignition-resistant material. SaferWood may be used in Class 1 and Class 2 structure hardening applications. FRTW may be required by code or selected by choice. The authority-having jurisdiction (AHJ) determines through adoption of model codes (e.g, IBC, IWUIC, etc.) whether or not ignition resistant FRTW is required. This varies by city, county, and state, and is influenced by other factors like fire hazard severity zones (FHSZ-California), wildfire resiliency codes (WRC-Colorado), wildland urban interface designation (WUI), as well as other code amendments, design considerations, and client preferences. In short, the best practice is to contact your AHJ (i.e., building and fire officials). Can I use a fire-retardant spray, coating, or paint?2025-08-06T12:55:20-07:00#### [Can I use a fire-retardant spray, coating, or paint?](#collapse-2-3932) No. The use of paints, coating, stains or other surface treatments do not meet the requirements to be classified as FRTW or to be used in an exterior setting, as outlined in the International Building Code (IBC), Sections 2303.2, 2303.2.3, and 2303.2.7. The reasons are because surface-applied fire retardants are prone to damage (during transport, storage, & installation) as well as performance degradation (from UV & weathering), and do not provide the one-time permanent protection to all surfaces as required by the International Building Code. Can I stain or paint FRTW?2023-11-28T14:41:19-08:00#### [Can I stain or paint FRTW?](#collapse-2-3935) Yes. However, please consult SaferWood-Chemco for recommendations. Our proprietary fire retardant, Thermex-FR, is formulated to be ignition-resistant and is the only pressure impregnated fire-retardant to successfully pass a 10-year outdoor weathering test. The very nature of our ability to prevent the spread of flame and smoke, and extend weathering, also means choosing the correct stain, paint, or coating for proper compatibility. Can I use FRTW on my soffit?2023-11-28T14:42:21-08:00#### [Can I use FRTW on my soffit?](#collapse-2-3937) Unless the local AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) has prohibited its use the answer is, yes. SaferWood treated wood building products are ignition resistant and comply with IWUIC. Per the International Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Code Section 504.3 Protection of Eaves: Eaves and soffits shall be protected on the exposed underside by ignition-resistant materials or by material approved for not less than 1-hour fire-resistance-rated construction, 2-inch (51 mm) nominal dimension lumber, or 1-inch (25 mm) nominal fire-retardant-treated lumber or 3/4-inch (19.1 mm) nominal fire-retardant-treated plywood, identified for exterior use and meeting the requirements of Section 2303.2 of the International Building Code. Fascias are required and shall be protected on the backside by ignition-resistant materials or by materials approved for not less than 1-hour fire-resistance-rated construction or 2-inch (51 mm) nominal dimension lumber. Is thermally modified wood WUI compliant?2023-11-28T14:43:07-08:00#### [Is thermally modified wood WUI compliant?](#collapse-2-3939) In most cases, no. To be fully compliant with IBC and IWUIC, an ignition-resistant wood building material must pass an extended fire-test for a total duration of 30 minutes. Outside a WUI zone or where the IWUIC has not been adopted a thermally modified wood product that has passed a 10-minute fire-test is acceptable for use. It is important to confirm two things: 1) most recent code adopted, and 2) WUI designation. Can you treat Glulam and CLT?2023-11-28T14:44:07-08:00#### [Can you treat Glulam and CLT?](#collapse-2-3941) Yes. If it can fit in our tube, then we can treat it. Max size of material: 4 ft wide x 50 ft long. Isn’t ASTM E84/UL 723 a Class A rating?2023-11-28T14:44:42-08:00#### [Isn’t ASTM E84/UL 723 a Class A rating?](#collapse-2-3943) Yes and no. ASTM E84/UL 723 is a Class A rating but to achieve this a wood building product must only pass a 10-minute fire-test. IBC and IWUIC ignition-resistant FRTW must pass an extended 20-minute fire-test for a total duration of 30-minutes. Essentially, achieving better than Class A. It is critical to understand this distinction and verify any product claiming to be WUI compliant and Class A has passed the extended 30-minute fire-test for flame spread and smoke development, and this is only performed after ASTM D2898 Accelerated Weathering. What is ASTM D2898 Accelerated Weathering?2023-11-28T14:45:01-08:00#### [What is ASTM D2898 Accelerated Weathering?](#collapse-2-3945) Fire-retardant-treated products for exterior applications must be subjected to actual or accelerated weathering prior to fire testing. Sometimes referred to as the “800-inch rain test,” the ASTM D2898 test has two methods to simulate weathering. Method A subjects the materials to 12 one-week condition cycles of 96 hours of water exposure and 72 hours of drying at 140 degrees F, the equivalent of 800 inches of rainfall over 12 weeks. Method B subjects materials to 1,000 hours of 24-hour exposures featuring four hours of wetting, four hours of drying and eight hours of resting, with drying time at 150 degrees F with continuous UV exposure. So, what is required for fully WUI compliant wood building materials?2023-11-28T14:45:53-08:00#### [So, what is required for fully WUI compliant wood building materials?](#collapse-2-3947) 1. Ignition resistant per IWUIC Section 503.2, Item 3, FRTW 2. Fire retardant pressure treatment per IBC 2303.2.1 3. ASTM E2768-11 Fire-Test-Response Extended 30 Minutes per ASTM E84/UL 723 4. The WUI is the zone of transition between unoccupied land and human development. It is the line, area, or zone where structures and other human development meet or intermingle with undeveloped wildland or vegetative fuels While the wildland urban interface (WUI) is a term commonly known in areas that experience wildfires, it may not be common to your fire department. You may believe that you don’t have a WUI problem, and that WUI fires only occur in Western states, but here are the facts: - More than 70,000 communities in the United States are at risk for WUI fires. - In 2021 over 7 million acres burned and nearly 6,000 structures were lost to WUI fires in the United States. - The WUI area continues to grow by approximately 2 million acres per year. - The United States Government, in compliance with [Executive Order 13728 for Wildland-Urban Interface Federal Risk Management](https://www.usfa.fema.gov/downloads/pdf/eo13728_guidelines.pdf), must adhere to the current IWUIC for every new federal building over 5,000 square feet in the WUI and encourage existing federal buildings located in the WUI to comply with the requirements set out in the code, including defensible space. FEMA will not provide federal assistance to rebuild public facilities in the WUI post-disaster unless the construction [adheres](https://www.fema.gov/sites/default/files/2020-07/fema_DRRA-1235b-public-assistance-codes-standards-interim-policy.pdf) to the current IWUIC. #### WUI Codes Growth Per the International Code Council \[ICC\], the International WUI Code \[IWUIC\] has been adopted in nearly 200 jurisdictions across 24 states and at the state level in 5 US States: Montana, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Utah, and Washington. ##### State WUI Codes [Washington State](https://www.saferwood.com/wui/wui-washington-state/) ### **Real Wood. Compliance with WUI codes in Washington State is typically enforced by local building departments and fire departments. Property owners in high-risk areas are encouraged to work with professionals, such as contractors, architects, and landscape architects, to ensure compliance with WUI codes and reduce their risk of wildfire damage. ### How WUI Codes Affect Construction and Development in Washington State The Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) codes in Washington State can have a significant impact on construction and development in high-risk areas. Here are some ways WUI codes can affect construction and development: 1. **Site selection:** Developers must carefully select sites for new construction to minimize wildfire risk. High-risk areas may be subject to more restrictive zoning regulations or building codes. 2. **Building design:** Structures in the WUI must be designed and constructed to resist ignition from external heat sources, such as embers from a wildfire. This may require the use of fire-resistant building materials and modifications to design and layout. 3. **Access and water supply:** Structures in the WUI must be accessible to fire vehicles and equipped with a reliable water supply for firefighting. This may require upgrades to roads, driveways, and water systems. 4. **Permitting and inspection:** Structures in the WUI must comply with specific permitting and inspection requirements outlined in the WUI codes. This may require additional review and approval from local building departments or fire departments. 5. **Landscape design:** Landscaping in the WUI must be designed to reduce the risk of wildfire damage, such as by using fire-resistant plants and creating defensible space around structures. This may require modifications to existing landscaping or changes to the design of new landscaping. 6. **Compliance enforcement:** Compliance with WUI codes is typically enforced by local building departments and fire departments, and failure to comply can result in fines, penalties, or other consequences. Overall, the WUI codes in Washington State are intended to reduce the risk of wildfire damage to structures built in high-risk areas. Compliance with these codes may require additional planning, design, and construction considerations, but can ultimately help protect property and save lives in the event of a wildfire. ### How to Determine Your Property’s WUI Designation in Washington State 1. Visit your State’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website and locate the WUI map for your area. 2. Enter your address or parcel number to determine if your property is located within the WUI. 3. If your property is located within the WUI, determine the risk level by checking the color-coded zones on the map. 4. Contact your local fire department or building department for more information on WUI codes and requirements in your area. 5. Consider hiring a professional to conduct a wildfire risk assessment of your property to help determine the best ways to reduce your risk of wildfire damage. 6. Take steps to mitigate your risk of wildfire damage, such as creating defensible space around your property, using fire-resistant building materials like SaferWood and keeping your property free of debris that could fuel a fire. ### The Benefits of WUI 1. **Safety:** ensure that structures built in high-risk areas are designed to minimize the risk of wildfire damage. 2. **Compliance:** Building codes require compliance with WUI codes in high-risk areas. 3. **Insurance:** Many insurance companies require that structures built in high-risk areas comply with WUI codes in order to obtain coverage. 4. **Resale value:** Homes and other structures built in compliance with WUI codes may have a higher resale value. ### **Get a wide range of fire-resistant wood products that meet WUI codes in Washington State with SaferWood** Protect your property and loved ones from the threat of wildfire in Washington State with SaferWood’s unparalleled protection against fire damage [Learn Where to Buy SaferWood](/contact/) --- ### [Contact](https://www.saferwood.com/contact/) **Published:** June 12, 2014 **Author:** ClickMonster **Content:** Use this form for general inquiries about our product and services.
